8th grade language arts
The 8th graders begin their year with a WWII unit, reading The Diary of Anne Frank, where they focus on comprehension, understanding the format of drama, and text to self reflection. They finish this unit by writing a research essay and creating a presentation about their WWII topic. They will then move into a fiction unit which focuses on characterization, plot, and vocabulary in Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. After Christmas, the 8th graders will read their first Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet, then move on to read The Outsiders. Themes such as prejudice, understanding self, and adventure are studied with these novel units. This class will also begin our Imaginaction activities which prepare them for public speaking.
